LGBTQIA+ Inclusive Children's Librarianship Art Contest
"LGBTQIA+ Inclusive Children's Librarianship: Policies, Programs, and Practices" (Forthcoming 2022) is a book written by Lucy Santos Green, Jenna Spiering, Vanessa Lynn Kitzie, and Julia Erlanger. It is a book written by librarians and library educators for public and school library professionals who work with children in grades K through 8th, and its goal is to help library professionals run libraries and programs that are welcoming and inclusive of LGBTQIA+ children and their families.
Who Can Participate
LGBTQIA+ children who are residents of the United States, and are enrolled in grades K-12.
We would love to receive artwork that represents a child's ideas of any of the following:
Me and the public library or librarian
Me and the school library or librarian
Memories of the library or librarian
Memories of a library program (examples: story time, gaming or coding, gardening)
Libraries as safe or unsafe spaces
Me and my reading self
Me and my making self
Any of the concepts listed above can reflect positive or negative experiences. Concepts can also be expanded to show family, friends, and/or community. Be creative and think outside of the box!
Preparing Your Entry
Line art on a solid background is preferred. Selected artwork will eventually be printed in Black and White on a 5 x 7.5 page, so even though your art may be submitted in color, you need to make sure it still looks the way you would like it to look if it were printed in grayscale. For art on paper, take a high quality picture (minimum resolution 300 dpi), and save your picture as a .jpg or .tif file. Digital art submissions need to follow the same resolution and file requirements.
Submitting Your Entry
One entry allowed per person.
All entries must be accompanied by an entry form signed by the entrant's parent/guardian.
By signing, parents/guardians grant permission for their child's artwork, first name, and age to be printed in the book.
All entries must be the entrant's original, unpublished, unproduced work. If Libraries Unlimited is notified that any element of an entry infringes upon the rights of another person, the entry will be disqualified.
Email the entry form and a high quality picture of the artwork to email@example.com by the deadline, October 1, 2021, using "Art Contest Submission" in the Subject Line.
Winners will be notified by October 15, 2021. If selected, winners will be asked to mail original artwork to Libraries Unlimited by October 25, 2021. Instructions will be provided at that time.
Winners will have their artwork featured in the book, "LGBTQIA+ Inclusive Children's Librarianship: Policies, Programs, and Practices," a nationally distributed publication.
Any submissions not selected will be permanently deleted from the submission email account to maintain the child's ownership over the original artwork.
Emailed submissions will not be acknowledged. Proof of submission is not considered proof of delivery to or receipt of such entry. Libraries Unlimited shall have no liability for any submission that is lost, intercepted, or not received by Libraries Unlimited for any reason.
